United Silicon HF (USi) is Iceland’s first Silicon Metal smelter located near the port of Helguvik, Reykjavik and is lincensed to run a four 32-megawatt furnaces operation for silicon metal production. Each furnace will be capable of producing 22,000 metric tons of silicon metal annually. By using power from the country’s natural geothermal and hydro resources and by importing selected quartz and reductants, the USi plant will offer the most sustainable Silicon Metal production in the world.
With an investment of more than €75 million, the project is one of the biggest in Iceland since 2009 and the first newly build Silicon Metal plant in 20 years outside China. Silicon metal produced in the plant will be marketed and sold exclusively by BIT Fondel BV, a Group subsidiary with many years’ experience of marketing Silicon Metal. With its own production the company will be able to enter into long-term contracts with new and existing customers in the aluminum, solar and chemical industries.
